Fécamp

Fécamp was the only place that stood out on the map as a pleasant 1-2 night stopping place on the north Normandie coast, prior to taking the ferry home.

Le Grand Pavois was a good choice, with easy, free parking opposite. It’s rated a s a 3 start hotel, but the room size and quality, along with the panoramic view of the harbour and sea push it more into the 4 star range. The lack of front of house atmosphere, the closed bar and lack of restaurant perhaps pull it back to 3 stars.

If you like fish there you’ll love the choice of eating places alongside the marina. We chose Chez Nounote and it turned out to be our favourite sort of restaurant: great atmosphere, good but simple choice of food and wine and all at a good price – £35 each for our 2 course meal with wine.

The town itself is a little dull, although we did laugh at the over-the-top-gothic splendour of the Palais, where they distill Benedictine Dom.
