Gijon – day 2

The sun shone and we walked the length of the long, crescent shaped promenade, climbing the hillside on the far side. Crowds of children and adoring parents were waiting outside the church, most likely arriving for a confirmation ceremony. The outfit de rigour was sailor suits for the boys and pretty dresses for the girls.

We turned around at the top, just past a hideous, monstrous, brutalist concrete sculpture and strolled around the old town, with its Plaza Mayor, harbour and statues, including a sculpture made of empty wine bottles.

Despite this being Sunday, when we expected the restaurant to be full of families, we were one of only 3 tables occupied and the meal was as slightly disappointing as the previous day. A snooze and another stroll along the other end of the harbour completed the day.
